What is Magnesium?
Magnesium functions in more than 300 enzymatic reactions. Magnesium is required at a number of steps during the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins. A number of enzymes participating in the synthesis of carbohydrates and lipids require magnesium for their activity. Glutathione, an important antioxidant, requires magnesium for its synthesis. Magnesium plays a structural role in bone, cell membranes, and chromosomes.
Early signs of magnesium
deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and
weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, muscle
contractions and cramps, seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms,
and coronary spasms can occur. Severe magnesium deficiency can result in low
levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia). Magnesium deficiency is also
associated with low levels of potassium in the blood (hypokalemia)
